Councilman Bobby Henon sent a letter to Philadelphia Mayor James Kenney to request information regarding worker misclassification to prepare for a hearing on the subject, which will be held in fall 2016.
Councilman Henon's concerns regarding worker misclassification were raised by the on-going labor dispute between Verizon and the Communication Workers of America (CWA).
Earlier this month, nearly 40,000 Verizon employees, who are CWA members, went on strike in demand of a fair contractor. As a result of the strike, Verizon has been using independent contractors.
"I believe in the power of collective bargaining and how important that process is to ensuring that workers have fair contracts, treatment and protections. I won't stand by while big business attempts to undercut the collective bargaining process through the intentional misclassification of workers by hiring independent contractors to perform important tasks," said Councilman Henon. "The recent CWA-Verizon labor dispute has brought issues of worker misclassification to light, which hurts our economy and damages the rights of workers. I will be introducing a resolution calling for a hearing on the subject of worker misclassification in the coming weeks."
