Wednesday, May 18, 2016 - Councilman Bobby Henon joined Mayor James Kenney, Superintendent Dr. William Hite, Mural Arts Program Executive Director Jane Golden, the Philadelphia Eagles executive office, team staff and players and Disston School teachers, students and community members for the Philadelphia Eagles Dream Team Playground Build and Mural Arts Program project.
"I want to thank the Philadelphia Eagles and the Mural Arts Program for coming to Disston Elementary School and making it an even more special place for students to learn. From the amazing mural to the new playground equipment, this is a legacy project that will help strengthen the school community and neighborhood of Tacony."
Councilman Henon first became involved with Disston in May 2015. At the time, the school was on the brink of losing its after school programming provider, had next to no playground equipment and was struggling with overcrowding -- overcrowding that significantly impacted recess and class time.
But, the students, staff, teachers and community members believed in Disston and were rallying around it to make a stronger school. So, Councilman Henon set an ambitious goal: make Disston one of the healthiest schools in the City.
That meant the after school programming had to continue and the school needed to promote active play as a part of a healthy lifestyle for students.
Working in partnership with Disston's leadership and the School District of Philadelphia, these components are now all underway.
With the addition of brand new playground equipment donated by the Philadelphia Eagles, Disston students will now have more to do at recess.
